UNDERTONES – Open House

Gallery Vertigo 2901 - 30 Avenue, Vernon, British Columbia, Canada

As an emerging artist, Nick Cote’s exhibit derives from stream of consciousness drawing. The majority of his work comes from life experiences, and has mental health undertones. Using surrealism and human anatomy, he hopes his art lifts the stigma of mental illness, breaks down barriers, and speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves. This will be Mr. Cote’s first exhibit in a gallery.

The show runs from October 5 to 30th, with an Open House on October 9th from noon to 4:00 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 4:00pm.

Not Neutral: Exploring Reconciliation in Museum Collections

Vernon Museum & Archives 3009 32nd Avenue, Vernon, British Columbia, Canada

Where do the things in the collection of your local museum come from? Who donated, collected or purchased the artefacts - and were they all acquired in ethical ways? Who decides what is ethical, what is true, what is real, & what is history? Whose stories are told & whose are silenced or ignored? We’ll explore some of these questions by looking at artefacts from the Vernon Museum Collection. Over the course of the evening, you'll be invited to engage in conversations about the mysteries and mistruths of artefact collecting, and you’ll also be invited to play a rousing round of Artefact or Artefiction!

Alex Cuba – SPOTLIGHT’s FOCUS OnSTAGE Concert Series

Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre 3800 - 33rd Street, Vernon, British Columbia, Canada

Alex Cuba performs Saturday, October 16th at 5:30pm and 8pm. His “sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and powerful guitar riffs, relinquish a conventional stereotype that exemplifies much of the Latin music landscape”. Though raised in Artemisa, an hour outside of Havana, Alex Cuba’s artistry is as far-flung as the place he has settled and lived for over fifteen years: Smithers, BC. His music at once incorporates his roots and is a unique amalgam of styles, having collaborated with artists ranging from Jason Mraz to Ron Sexsmith and Nelly Furtado; and bringing together melodies, pop soul hooks and rock chords in songs that may seem to bear little resemblance to traditional Cuban form.
