What Feeds Me – by SD22
Gallery Vertigo is proud to present the SD22 High School exhibit "What Feeds Me." The schools participating are Clarence Fulton, Kalamalka, Vernon Secondary and W.L. Seaton. The exhibit runs from January 11 to 29.
"What Feeds Me" has a literal interpretation: what does your body require physically to continue to grow and survive. It can also be thought of figuratively. This figurative, more sophisticated interpretation of "What Feeds Me" is the most straightforward way to state what the students were encouraged to pursue and express for this project. You will see those expressions presented in a variety of mediums.
Gallery Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4pm

Learn & Connect: Deconstructing the Doctrine of Discovery
Learn & Connect: Deconstructing the Doctrine of Discovery
Learn + Connect is a free online program that has been developed so participants can explore colonial perspectives of history, reflect on how that influences our understanding and actions, and discuss ways we can move forward. This session will look at the Doctrine of Discovery through the lens of a film put out by the Anglican Church* about the devastating ruling by Pope Alexander VI that decreed that any land inhabited by Indigenous Peoples was declared “empty” and the inhabitants “non-human”. “Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen Land, Strong Hearts” will be the foundation of our enquiry into how this centuries old document continues to profoundly – and negatively – impact Indigenous people today. Fibre and Fotos, by Emily Fraser
Gallery Vertigo is proud to introduce M. Emily Fraser as their featured member for the month of February.
Emily has been a photographer all her life and encouraged to revel and wonder at all that can be found in the natural world. Colour, light, lines, shapes and all the interactions in nature fuel her wonder and delight. She loves capturing that wonder with her camera and ‘building’ art with fabric, fibre, paper, clay on their own or together. The patterns and texture found in our surroundings encourage simply “ messing about” with recycled and found fibre of all kinds. It has proven to be the perfect vehicle to create art that can suggest or representative scenes or simply inspire abstract creations.
Emily Fraser's work will be showing in Gallery Vertigo's Judith Jurica Gallery.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 4:00pm.

Deconstructing the Doctrine of Discovery
Deconstructing the Doctrine of Discovery
The second session in the Learn + Connect series, invites participants back to a discussion about the Doctrine of Discovery to explore themes around land theft, genocide and personal responsibility towards reconciliation.
The Doctrine of Discovery was a late-medieval philosophy that was used to justify imperialist ventures and legitimize the colonization of Indigenous peoples in various regions around the world. The centuries old document informed Canada’s earliest European explorers, and continues to profoundly – and negatively – impact Indigenous people today.

The Art of Black and White
Photographer Dominic Rouse once said, “Colour is everything, black and white is more.”
Find out what happens when artists cast aside their colour palettes. The Vernon Community Arts Centre invited 2D and 3D artists to express their creative visions focusing on the visual power of black and white. Creating in black and white encourages the artist to concentrate on composition, value, lighting, and form, and to focus on the image or subject. It can also be a powerful way to express emotion or draw importance through symbolism.
The exhibit runs from February 4th to the 28th, and is open 6 days a week. Mon-Thurs 9-9, Fri-Sat, 9-5.
Admission Free. Donations Welcome.
