Embrace the Nations – Diwali – Festival of Lights

Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society (VDICSS) along with Vernon Elks 45 is thrilled to announce, a series of cultural events called “Embrace the Nations”. The four events will take place over the next 8 months and highlight four cultures from around the world.  The VDICSS community members from those cultures will host the event along side Vernon Elk 45. The events aim to celebrate the diversity of cultures that are within the Vernon community, offering attendees a taste of the tradition cuisine, music, and dance that define these rich heritages.

Delight in the brilliance of Indian culture through a sample of Indian cuisine, Rangoli art, Henna and traditional dances and music.

Join us on the last Saturday of each month, Family Saturdays take place with an art project suitable for both little kids and big kids. Parents/guardians are also encouraged to participate and create their own works of art. The workshop begins promptly at 1 p.m., and families are welcome to stay for the whole session, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., or to depart sooner. All materials required for the workshops are provided. To ensure a space, please pre-register online.
• $5/members • $9/non-members.
Sierra, our Learning and Community Engagement Curator, will begin the workshop by touring the current exhibition that is on display. Afterward, she will lead you through a hands-on art activity inspired by the artwork.

Collage Journals
This session will begin with a tour of the exhibition Illuminated Language, by the Edmonton-based artist Dick Averns. This exhibition draws on multiple bodies of text-based art spanning over three decades of the artist's career. in response to the themes of the exhibition, we will be making a collage journal.
