New Discoveries
October 22, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
$32.50 – $65The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra is so excited to welcome you to New Discoveries and the launch of our 2023-24 season. Join us for a musical discovery that will awaken your curiosity and inspire you with the power of live orchestral music.
As well as an aptly named opening piece by Kati Agócs, “…like treasure hidden in a field,” the program features a return visit by the extraordinary violinist, Timothy Chooi, performing Barber’s beautiful and popular Violin Concerto. Beginning with a lyrical, gracious theme, this concerto embodies humour, drama, melancholy, perpetual motion, great energy, rhythmic thrust and virtuoso fireworks for soloist and orchestra alike.
Dvořák’s ever-popular Symphony No. 9, “New World,” will be featured in the second half. Described as his “musical postcard from the Old World to the New,” Dvorak wrote it during his tenure as the Director of Music at the brand-new Conservatory of Music in New York City in the 1890s. He drew heavily on themes that were reminiscent of folk, African and Indigenous music. The glorious slow movement, one of Dvořák’s most beloved creations, later had words added to it to create ‘Goin’ Home,’ a song in the style of a spiritual.
Join Music Director Rosemary Thomson, one hour before each Mainstage Series performance (Kelowna, Penticton Vernon), for a pre-concert chat that will provide insight into the music, the composers and the performance.
Tickets can be purchased through the Ticketseller website.
