Speaker Series with Dr. Wendy Wickwire
May 31 @ 1:00 pm
Date: Saturday, May 31st, 2025
Time: 1:00 PM
Location: Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library
Don’t miss this special Hometown Histories presentation with Dr. Wendy Wickwire, renowned historian and author of At the Bridge: James Teit and an Anthropology of Belonging. Learn about the life and legacy of James Teit—an early ethnographer and ally to Indigenous communities—and the importance of oral history in understanding the past.
Dr. Wickwire is an expert in Indigenous and oral history and Northwest anthropology, as well as an Emeritus Professor at the University of Victoria. She is the author of At the Bridge: James Teit and an Anthropology of Belonging and editor of Write It On Your Heart: The Epic World of an Okanagan Storyteller (with Elder Harry Robinson, a member of the Lower Similkameen Band). Her scholarship offers vital insights into the lived experiences, voices, and resistance of Indigenous peoples, and the significance of oral history in shaping understandings of the past.
Accessibility and Parking Information:
The library parkade is open during library hours. Please note that the gate now closes between each car—attendees should roll up to the gate as close to the building as possible to trigger the sensor. There is an outside entrance on 28th Street with an accessible ramp and entry from the library’s main foyer.
The event will include a short Q&A and is presented by the Museum & Archives of Vernon and the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Historical Society, with generous hosting by the Okanagan Regional Library. Donations to support the MAV or OHS are welcome (details available at the event).
Visit The Museum website for more details.
