The Vernon Museum and the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Historical Society are pleased to present the next installment in the Hometown Histories Speaker Series, featuring independent aviation researcher and writer David A. Riach. The event will take place on Saturday, April 26, at 1:00 PM, and will be accessible via Zoom from the comfort of home or through a group viewing at the Vernon Museum (3009 32nd Avenue).

Following last year’s captivating presentation on pilot Bill McCluskey, Riach returns to Vernon to share the story of another Canadian aviation legend, Norm Forester (1898-1975). Born in Oakville, Ontario, Forester moved with his family to Vernon at the age of 10 and spent his formative years in the community, where he attended school and took his first job. He later enlisted for military service and, after World War I, returned to Vernon for several years before embarking on a distinguished aviation career.

Over his lifetime, Forester piloted upwards of 40 different aircraft types—both military and civilian, on land and water. At the height of his bush-flying career, the Vernon News took pride in claiming him as a “Vernon man” and “Vernon pilot.” Despite his extensive travels, Forester and his wife Elsie maintained strong family ties to Vernon throughout their lives.
