Featuring Evan Matchett-Wong, a Two-Spirit textile artist, this workshop will let local youth explore identities, discuss oppression, and embrace heritage through embroidery and textiles, promoting healing and celebration.
Evan Matchett-Wong is a textile artist hails from Treaty 6 Territory, with a strong focus on intersectional artistic practices, reflecting their mixed Chinese-Dene heritage and queerness. They will use Indigenous practices to facilitate conversation and ideas and create an open and safe space for participants. This embroidery/textile based workshop will give the opportunity for local youth to explore not only their unique identities and talk about their experiences of oppression but also give them the time to heal and celebrate their heritage.

Poetry encourages us to access and delve into our emotional selves, enabling us to write about and share profound experiences that can transform ourselves and others. Dedicated to Queer community, workshop participants will reflect on the complexity of living in Vernon, on unceded syilx land, while navigating our Queer identities within the broader community.

Exploring Sites of Oppression through Art with Kay Barkved
This dynamic workshop series aims to create a transformative and inclusive environment, allowing 2SLGBTQIA+ participants to explore the intricate intersections of identity through various creative practices. Through the integration of performance art, dance, spoken word , painting, and drawing, participants will create site-specific works that shed light on the oppression they face in their community. Interactive exercises, discussions, and collaborative activities will enhance engagement and participants will have the opportunity to access pertinent resources, readings, and multimedia materials to support their work. Connections to support networks and community organizations will be central to this series, promoting a sense of community through peer support and networking opportunities.

During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on themselves and the unique sparkle they bring to the world. Through a series of personal and collaborative writing and drawing exercises, coupled with group discussions, participants will enhance their connection to self, strengthen ties within the group or community, and foster a greater sense of self-acceptance. The session will specifically support participants in exploring gender identity, and how gender expression may be stifled by societal expectations and the urge to conform. All gender identities are welcome; queer and trans experiences will be centered.
