Encouraging Ability in the Arts

Vernon Community Arts Centre is pleased to present “Encouraging Ability in the Arts”, an exhibit featuring works from the Joining Hands Program.

Joining Hands is an art based program providing adults with diverse abilities an encouraging environment to explore their artistic skills. Working with beginner, emerging and established artists, we focus on the development of individual ability and confidence in the arts. Our belief is that through art we create a sense of belonging in an inclusive community.

Writing Workshop with Gail Anderson-Dargatz: Overcoming Our Fears to Write Powerful Stories

Author and writing coach Gail Anderson-Dargatz will draw from more than twenty years of experience as a writer, teacher and developmental editor to explore the many ways we avoid conflict in our projects and offer solutions that will help you develop your project to the fullest.

GAIL ANDERSON-DARGATZ’s novels The Cure for Death by Lightning and A Recipe for Bees were both short-listed for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Her thrillers The Almost Wife and The Almost Widow were both national bestsellers. Gail also writes hi-lo books for the educational market. Coil Pot Building Demonstration

Come down to the Arts Centre and watch ceramic artist, Sabrina Boulay, while she works on a large scale coil pot. Coiling pottery was one of the primary potting methods prior to the development of pottery wheels. Coil pots are sturdy in large forms and have been used for thousands of years across the globe.

Demonstrations will be held at the Vernon Community Arts Centre on Sunday, September 24th between 12:30-1:30pm, and Monday, September 25th, 4:30-5:30pm. If weather permits, we will be outside on the front lawn of the Arts Centre.

Handmade Journal Demo

Come for a FREE demonstration on how to create handbound books that can be used for journals, sketchbooks, or zines. Local artist Silmara Emde will demonstrate the basics of bookbinding using tools and papers you already have around your home.

Dan Mangan – Going Somewhere Tour

Dan Mangan is a two-time JUNO award winning & two-time Polaris Music Prize listed musician and songwriter. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia with his wife and two sons. He has released 5 studio LPs on Arts & Crafts, and toured extensively in North America, Europe & Australia. Dan also scored the feature film Hector And The Search For Happiness starring Simon Pegg as well as television shows for Netflix (Hilda) and AMC (Unspeakable). In 2017, he co-founded Side Door, a community marketplace platform matching performers with spaces to create shows anywhere, including interactive ticketed online shows.

The afternoon will include a screening of the documentary, free refreshments, and a Live chat with the lead performer and director of “Hey Viola!”, a musical exploration of civil rights trailblazer, Viola Desmond—the fearless woman featured on your $10 bill. It is a smashing tour-de-force performance by acclaimed Canadian jazz and blues singer Krystle Dos Santos, directed by Tracey Power.
